Idrissa Kargbo threw his arms in the air to try to describe his excitement at learning of his entry into the New York City Marathon.
The runner from Sierra Leone, who boarded a plane for the first time to come to the race, is the sort of smiling face that used to define big-city marathons. On Monday, his story was only a brief delay to the questions about natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
The NYC Marathon is Sunday, an event usually associated with cheering fans lining streets and giddy runners waving to the cameras. Then came last year's race week.

Taken from the PATC website:
"We introduce young athletes to the joys of running and the benefits one can acquire through physical activity and conditioning. We emphasize improvement of the "individual" which is easily measured in the sport of cross country by timing certain distances early in the season and comparing those efforts 8 weeks later."
"The Purdue Area Track Club (PATC) offers a cross country program for beginning and experienced age group runners. It will last from 6-8 weeks (12-16 sessions), depending on your availability and competition results."
The call-out and first practice is Monday, September 30th.

As a kid, Ryan Archdeacon asked his parents for a microscope so he could analyze sewer samples and bits of dental plaque. Now Archdeacon is building a lifestyle app he hopes will help people better connect with their bodies.
The One Aura app (free on iOS) pairs with compatible biosensors to give real-time data about your body's metabolism and circulation. Users just have to wear one of the seven approved Bluetooth-connected biosensors (listed in the iTunes app description). The app will show live metrics in clean data visualizations.
The app currently focuses on metabolism and circulation because they are important indicators of how the body is doing, Archdeacon told Mashable.
"A lot of people don't understand their metabolism," he said, citing weight management as a problem that could be helped if they did.
Circulation, meanwhile, is "so foundational to our long-term health and well-being." Archdeacon points out that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.
