Two Purdue professors run through life together

Posted: Friday, November 8, 2013 10:00 am | Updated: 12:01 pm, Fri Nov 8, 2013.
The romance started in South Bend, Ind., and two professors of liberal arts have been running everywhere together ever since.

Thomas and Sarah Mustillo found themselves teaching at Purdue after meeting in South Bend. Sarah, an associate professor in sociology, and Thomas, an assistant professor in political science, were brought together by fate, they said, in an unassuming bar.

I saw him and asked my friends, ‘Who is he?’ Then he was gone. I was really disappointed I wasn’t going to meet this person,” said Sarah. “Then we all went to a second bar; he showed up, walked in, came right over and started talking to me. It’s like it was meant to be.”

After they both completed graduate school, the couple went on the job market together. Thomas said they were happy to find jobs together in Indiana.
Now that Thomas and Sarah are settled, their daily routine contains a lot of running — running after their three kids, running to campus and running for exercise.

CLM Registration opens on line this Friday, November 1, at noon Eastern Time.

Would you like to volunteer before or during the race?  You can do that online this year here.  All volunteers get a CLM t shirt.   This is a great chance to welcome runners from all over the country to our community.  Your help makes this happen.

We've added gender-specific T Shirt sizing for this year's race, customized batons for each relay team to hand off, early start times and improved lap timing. And, for runners finishing their 2nd or 3rd CLM, we have some extra bling for you at the finish line!

We also area allowing early start times and will wrap everything up by 3pm on race day, 6 hours after the 9am start.

We bring back the same course as 2013, pick your own bib number for marathoners, litter-free water stop, and a low-cost, fun race to help motivate you to train all winter.

We sold out our race in four weeks last year.  I have no idea how it will go this year, but do register early to reserve your spot.  We will have a wait list if we sell out but if you don't like flying stand by, try to get in early.

If it works in your schedule, I hope you can join us again as a runner or volunteer.  Feel free to forward this to your friends.   Email me with any questions.  We enjoy planning this event as a unique addition to the nation's running calendar.

NYC Marathon returns after Boston attack

Story courtesy of WTHR.

Idrissa Kargbo threw his arms in the air to try to describe his excitement at learning of his entry into the New York City Marathon.

The runner from Sierra Leone, who boarded a plane for the first time to come to the race, is the sort of smiling face that used to define big-city marathons. On Monday, his story was only a brief delay to the questions about natural disasters and terrorist attacks.

The NYC Marathon is Sunday, an event usually associated with cheering fans lining streets and giddy runners waving to the cameras. Then came last year's race week.

West Lafayette girls, boys cross country sweep New Prairie Semistate titles

Congratulations West Lafayette Runners!
Good Luck at the State Meet!

Story by Staff Reports, JCOnline      Photo by Danny Shelton for JCOnline

West Lafayette led a banner morning for local and area cross country teams at Saturday’s New Prairie Semistate.
With Lauren Johnson, Kristen Johnson and Delaney Barber finishing second, third and fourth respectively, the Red Devils girls tied a semistate record by scoring 32 points and claiming their third consecutive New Prairie championship. LaPorte was a distant second with 116 points.
Lake Central also scored 32 points in 2007.
We could have scored all seven of our girls and still won against everybody else’s five,” West Lafayette coach Steve Lewark said. “Lauren, Kristen and Delaney ran fantastic today. It was not a good day to run, very windy and a little on the cold side. The course was not in fantastic shape because of recent rains.”

Lafayette Jeff cross country taking aim at state berth

Seniors Josh Long and Quintin Talbott know they may be running their final cross country races for Lafayette Jeff on Saturday, but the duo has another goal besides taking the Bronchos to the state finals.
Coach (Dave) Howell tells us that this team is one of the best teams he’s ever coached, and we want to make sure it is the best team he’s ever coached,” Talbott said. “We want to go to state, but even if we don’t, we still can be the best.”
Long believes the New Prairie Semistate will be the best race he and the Bronchos will run this season.
We’re going to run it like it’s the last race we’ll ever run in our entire lives,” said Long, whose mother and aunt helped Lafayette Jeff finish sixth in the state in 1991. “I’m hoping to run in college, but it could be my last high school meet. No matter what my time is this week, it will be my best race.”
The Bronchos, West Lafayette, Frankfort, McCutcheon and Twin Lakes will be among 20 teams competing for six state berths. The level of competition will be higher, and so will the toughness of the course.

West Lafayette boys, girls easily win sectional cross country titles

Story By Sam King, JCOnline         Photo by Jerry Schultheiss

A light drizzle dampened the course at the Tippecanoe Amphitheater just before Tuesday’s cross country sectional, but it did little to slow down the West Lafayette Red Devils.
Led by a pair of victorious sophomores, West Lafayette swept the boys and girls sectional titles for the third time in four years.
This is my favorite weather, where it’s drizzling a little bit and there is no sun beating down on you,” said WL junior Logan Berndt, who finished ninth.
Unchallenged, the third-ranked West Side girls won their fourth straight sectional, posting a perfect score by taking the top five spots. Sophomore twins Lauren and Kristen Johnson finished 1-2, finishing side by side in 18:55.
Another twin, sophomore Cooper Williams, repeated as the boys individual champion in 16:10, His twin brother Dylan was part of a pack that claimed the fourth through seventh spots and helped separate the Red Devils from runner-up Lafayette Jeff.
We were just trying to go out there and do as well as we could to get the win as a team, and we succeeded in that,” Cooper Williams said.
Last year, McCutcheon ended WL’s streak of three straight boys sectional titles. Early Tuesday, it looked as if Lafayette Jeff would keep the Red Devils from claiming the team title before a last-mile push.
Following Williams was Frankfort’s Cody Bray and Rossville’s Solomon Heffernan, but after that came WL juniors Jake Cohen and Dominic Patacsil and sophomores Evan Johnson and Dylan Williams. That bunch propelled past Broncho runners Cayce Griffin, Daniel Feltis, Zack Vandivier and Josh Long to help the Red Devils outscore the Bronchos, 23-70.

New course record set during the 36th annual Chicago Marathon

Tribune reporters

While security was on the minds of many during their 26.2 mile journey through the city's streets, participants didn't let it stop them as the winning runner set a new course record in what has become a historic Chicago Marathon.
Dennis Kimetto of Kenya won the male division with an unofficial time of 2:03:45, breaking the previous record set last year of 2:04:38.
Rita Jeptoo of Kenya won the female division with an unofficial time of 2:19:59, slower than the 2002 course record of 2:17:18.

Purdue Area Track Club: Fall Program Start Up Just Around the Corner

Taken from the PATC website:

"We introduce young athletes to the joys of running and the benefits one can acquire through physical activity and conditioning. We emphasize improvement of the "individual" which is easily measured in the sport of cross country by timing certain distances early in the season and comparing those efforts 8 weeks later."

"The Purdue Area Track Club (PATC) offers a cross country program for beginning and experienced age group runners. It will last from 6-8 weeks (12-16 sessions), depending on your availability and competition results."

The call-out and first practice is Monday, September 30th.

Lafayette native sees all 50 states one race at a time

Story by Jeff Washburn & JCOnline

Soon after retiring from a 26-year career as an elementary school physical education teacher in Arizona, Lafayette native and avid distance runner Bill Wright told his sister-in-law that he was planning a vacation.

He would run 5K races in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina.

"She said, 'Are you trying to run a race in every state?' and I said no," said Wright, 59, a 1972 Lafayette Jeff grad and a 1976 Purdue graduate. "I had never thought about it. At that point, I had run at least one race in 18 states. Then I decided to do the other 32."

Thanks for the great story Jeff and JCOnline. And, way to go, Bill! What inspiration.

There are many angles to this story. But, two initial take-aways are:

1) Have a goal and stick to it, no matter how long it takes.

2) Age is relative; you're only as old as you let yourself believe.

Thanks for the great example, Bill.

Happy Birthday, Jesse Owens

Photo of Jesse Owens
100 years ago today, one of the greatest athletes ever was born. We should never forget, of his many accomplishments, his grace, talent and the sheer force of will he demonstrated at the 1936 Olympics hosted by Hitler's Germany.

When you see what he accomplished, never let anyone (especially that little voice inside of you) say that it's just to hard to try or that the odds are stacked against you so why even try.

West Lafayette boys, girls are leaders of the City/County pack

Story by Clyde Hughes
Photos by Brent Drinkut
www.jconline.com

After coming off a big double win at the Western Invitational on Saturday, the West Lafayette boys and girls cross country teams kept the momentum going by sweeping to comfortable victories in the City/County meet at the Tippecanoe Amphitheater Tuesday evening.

Third-ranked West Lafayette occupied the first six places in the girls race for a perfect score of 15 points to runner-up Harrison’s 53. West Side’s Delaney Barber led the Red Devil pack with a time of 20:12.

The Red Devil boys were nearly as impressive. Evan Johnson, Dominic Patacsil, Cooper Williams and Jake Cohen essentially ran across the finish line at the same time (17:04), but Johnson was awarded first place.

Nutrition Tips for Your Young Athletes

Active.com delivers a great refresher article on Nutrition and Hydration tips for Young Athletes.

Courtesy of Active.com

Encouraging kids to eat healthy is important, but proper nutrition is even more essential for young athletes.

Athletes should build balanced plates," says Katie Jeffrey, MS, RD, CSSD, a registered dietitian, in Stonington, Connecticut. "About 50 to 60 percent of their plate should be composed of carbohydrates such as whole-wheat pasta, bread, quinoa, brown rice or a sweet or baked potato. Twenty-five to 30 percent of the plate should be non-starchy vegetables such as lettuce, greens, cabbage, broccoli and carrots. The remaining 15 to 20 percent should be filled with lean protein such as chicken, turkey, eggs, beans, tofu, nuts, seeds or lean cuts of red meat or pork."

How an App That Tracks Circulation, Metabolism Helps Your Body

As a kid, Ryan Archdeacon asked his parents for a microscope so he could analyze sewer samples and bits of dental plaque. Now Archdeacon is building a lifestyle app he hopes will help people better connect with their bodies.

The One Aura app (free on iOS) pairs with compatible biosensors to give real-time data about your body's metabolism and circulation. Users just have to wear one of the seven approved Bluetooth-connected biosensors (listed in the iTunes app description). The app will show live metrics in clean data visualizations.

The app currently focuses on metabolism and circulation because they are important indicators of how the body is doing, Archdeacon told Mashable.

"A lot of people don't understand their metabolism," he said, citing weight management as a problem that could be helped if they did.

Circulation, meanwhile, is "so foundational to our long-term health and well-being." Archdeacon points out that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States.
